Top researchers comScore have announced several changes regarding smartphone statistics in Canada, and a focal point of their report was that the Android operating system has risen to the most popular spot by smartphone users in Canada.

  Previously, Research In Motion (RIM), who manufactures BlackBerry devices, sat at the top spot for several years. In fact, in 2011, the BlackBerry operating system was used by 35.8 percent of smartphone users in Canada. However, in the latest review of these statistics, comScore has advised that Android is now the most popular operating system, currently sitting on 34 percent. This is quite a change from 2011, where Android had only 25 percent.

Why Android, not iOS?

  While Apple iPhone has frequently been the highest-selling device in Canada, it is not at the top of the list for operating systems. The most likely reason for this is the fact that the Android operating system runs on a large number of different devices which helps to bring their numbers up. iOS has been sitting somewhere in the middle of the other manufacturers, having 30.1 percent usage in 2011 and 32 percent usage in the latest report.

  In regards to which phone manufacturer held the largest number of sold devices in Canada, Samsung came out on top. comScore reported that 25 percent of devices sold in Canada were Samsung and it is believed that this is partly attributed to the fact that in the past couple of years, Samsung has released a significantly higher amount of smartphone models, which in turn has strengthened their results.

  Due to the fact that more and more devices are supporting the Android operating system, it seems likely that the upward trend of usage of this operating system in Canada will increase. Apple iOS and iPhones will also continue to hold impressive results due to the success of their ecosystem.
